Cardinals Trade Mike Leake

Before the St. Louis Cardinals lost 6-5 on a home run robbing catch in the top of the 9th with 2 outs, the Redbirds sent starting pitcher Mike Leake to the Seattle Mariners along with cash to return Venezuelan infielder, Rayder Ascanio. The Cardinals signed Leake in the 2015-2016 offseason to a 5 year – $88 million contract. He is still owed $55 million on the deal and the Mariners will receive $17 million to reduce the cost. Ascanio is only 21 but signed with the Mariners in 2012. In 425 games in the minor leagues, he has .240/.320/.329.

Since being tied for first place in the Central division back on August 12, the cardinals are 5-10 and have fallen 6 games back behind the Chicago Cubs for first place and are 5.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot.
